Antique Van Briggle Butterfly Vase: Mulberry Glaze, Shape 684 (1908-1911)
Van Briggle
An exceptional, highly collectible example of early American Arts & Crafts art pottery: an authentic Van Briggle Butterfly (or Luna Moth) bulbous low bowl/pot, dating between 1908 and 1911. This stunning piece features stylized, low-relief butterfly wings that gracefully wrap around the rounded, squat shoulders of the vessel. Finished in Van Briggle's iconic matte Mulberry glaze. Bottom Markings & Provenance: The bottom ring features authentic, completely hand-incised period markings that securely date this piece to the 1908–1911 production window at the Colorado Springs factory. The Double AA Logo: Hand-carved, conjoined double-A emblem framing the top, honoring founders Artus and Anne Van Briggle. Van Briggle: Hand-incised company name. Colo. Spgs: The early geographic abbreviation introduced in 1906. No Date Stamp: The definitive absence of a 4-digit year stamp accurately isolates this piece to the narrow 1908–1911 timeframe (prior to the resumption of dating in 1912). Bottom Wash: Features the classic, early sandy exposed clay base ring with a light white bottom wash. Clean Interior: Zero gray potting soil film or white mineral lime scaling on the inside. Crisp Early Details: The relief lines on the mold are sharp and deep, filled with contrasting glaze highlights.
